Chris Algieri began his martial arts training in Chinese Kenpo under the tutelage of Robert Mauro at the age of 10. Chris received his black belt at the age of 15 and began competing in amateur kickboxing at the age of 16. While in high school, Chris started wrestling and eventually became captain of the St. Anthony’s varsity squad. Chris won 2 Catholic League titles and one Catholic State Championship and ultimately made it to the semi-finals of the Public State Tournament. He was also awarded a wild card nomination to compete in the High School National Championships, but a knee injury barred Chris from participating. After high school, Chris spent 3 seasons as assistant coach to the St. Anthony’s Friar Wrestling team.
Chris attended Stony Brook University and decided to concentrate his athletic prowess to Full-Contact Kickboxing. He then began sparring and training with Tim “Bring the Pain” Lane under the watchful eye of Mauro. After completing an undefeated amateur career that culminated with a USKBA Northeast Championship, Chris decided to turn professional at the age of 19 years old. After just 2 years as a professional, Chris won the WKA Super Welterweight World Championship against tough Canadian National Champion, Brad Fowler via 8th round KO. Chris has fought champions from all over the globe including: Canada, England, Italy, Yugoslavia, Puerto Rico, Lebanon, Dominican Republic, South Africa and Mongolia. He has recently teamed up with Keith Trimble of Bellmore Kickboxing and continues to improve and fight the best in the world.
Chris fulfilled a long time goal on October 26th, 2007 when he successfully captured the ISKA World Welterweight Championship from Scott Mukaddam at the Tropicana in Atlantic City. Algieri got up off the canvas from an incorrectly scored knee to the head to sweep the rest of the rounds and win a wide unanimous 10 round decision. Obtaining this title had been a dream of Chris’ since he was a young boy. Algieri is currently undefeated and is the undisputed world champion in 2 weight divisions and 2 different organizations at the same time.
Chris Algieri graduated Stony Brook University with honors in May 2007 with a Bachelors of Science in Health Care Management. He currently works at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and is pursuing his Masters degree in Clinical Nutrition. Chris aspires to go to Medical School and combine his experience as a world-class athlete and his knowledge of nutrition to spearhead a practice designed to treat competitive athletes without the use of unnecessary surgeries, pharmaceuticals or long lay-offs.
